Uma proibição de redes sociais para menores de 16 anos “não está nos planos no momento”, afirmou Peter Kyle, Secretário de Estado para Ciência e Tecnologia do Reino Unido, em resposta ao pedido de adolescentes para repensar uma possível restrição no acesso a plataformas como TikTok, Instagram e Snapchat.
O The Guardian informa que Kyle está focado em pressionar as redes sociais a aumentar a segurança online, com novas leis previstas para entrar em vigor no próximo ano, que podem resultar em pesadas multas e até prisão por violações de segurança.
Em reunião com adolescentes em Londres, Kyle enfatizou que “não há nenhum programa de trabalho para proibir smartphones para crianças”, considerando tal medida indesejável.

Durante o encontro, os jovens expressaram preocupações sobre o vício nas redes sociais e as dificuldades de obter ajuda quando suas contas são hackeadas ou quando encontram conteúdo perturbador.
No entanto, nenhum deles pediu uma proibição, e muitos alertaram que isso prejudicaria suas conexões sociais e acesso a apoio.
Kyle ainda não descartou a possibilidade de uma proibição no futuro, dependendo das evidências, como as que podem surgir na Austrália, onde a legislação sobre o tema está sendo analisada.
Ele também expressou preocupação com os riscos graves associados às mídias sociais, como suicídios e crimes instigados online. Kyle se mostrou otimista com os avanços no software de verificação de idade, esperando que ele ajude a proteger as crianças de conteúdo inapropriado em breve.
