A Volkswagen e a Rivian formalizaram uma joint venture de US$ 5,8 bilhões (R$ 33,67 bilhões, na conversão direta), que começará oficialmente em 13 de novembro. Originalmente, o investimento da Volkswagen na Rivian estava estimado em US$ 5 bilhões (R$ 29,03 bilhões).
O principal objetivo da parceria é o desenvolvimento de nova arquitetura elétrica e software para veículos futuros, com foco em modelos de carros subcompactos. O primeiro modelo da nova linha, o R2, da Rivian, deve entrar em produção em 2026.
Detalhes sobre a parceria
A nova joint venture, chamada “Rivian and VW Group Technology, LLC”, será liderada por Wassym Bensaid, chefe de software da Rivian, e Carsten Helbing, engenheiro chefe da Volkswagen;
As equipes ficarão inicialmente sediadas em Palo Alto, Califórnia (EUA), e a empresa também planeja expandir para outras localizações na América do Norte e Europa;
A Rivian exibiu protótipo de veículo que combinava software da Rivian com tecnologia de hardware da VW, desenvolvido ao longo de 12 semanas pela nova equipe.

Com o fechamento do acordo, a Rivian receberá empréstimo inicial de US$ 1 bilhão (R$ 5,8 bilhões) da Volkswagen, seguido de US$ 1,3 bilhão (R$ 7,54 bilhões) em ações da Rivian e US$ 3,5 bilhões (R$ 20,32 bilhões) adicionais nos próximos anos.

A tecnologia que emergirá dessa joint venture será utilizada tanto nos modelos de entrada da Rivian, como o R2, quanto em veículos do VW Group, como os de Audi, Porsche e Scout Motors. A parceria é vista como impulso necessário para a Rivian, que tem enfrentado dificuldades financeiras desde sua oferta pública em 2021.
Para a Volkswagen, a colaboração oferece acesso à avançada abordagem de software da Rivian, ajudando a empresa a competir em mercado cada vez mais voltado para veículos definidos por software e atualizações over-the-air (OTA).
Ambos os grupos esperam que a joint venture ajude a superar desafios financeiros e acelere a transição para veículos elétricos.
