A popularização e os avanços da Inteligência Artificial (IA) estão exigindo das big techs um foco maior nos data centers e, de certa forma, na energia nuclear. Isso porque há uma necessidade crescente de reduzir as emissões, e essa fonte de energia é considerada uma importante opção nesse sentido.
Nos EUA, a demanda por energia para data centers está projetada para triplicar até 2030, chegando a 80 Gigawatts. Empresas como Oracle, Google, Amazon e Microsoft estão investindo em energia nuclear, particularmente em pequenos reatores modulares (SMRs).

Oracle, Google e Amazon, por exemplo, estão apostando nos SMRs para alimentar seus data centers. Já o destaque da Microsoft está em um acordo com a Constellation Energy para reabrir a usina de Three Mile Island no estado norte-americano da Pensilvânia. Essa usina ficou famosa pelo pior acidente nuclear na história dos EUA, ocorrido em 1979. Mas a Constellation Energy afirma que a maioria de seus componentes está pronta para funcionar novamente e que a planta está em condições extraordinárias.
O “boom” da energia nuclear nos EUA A energia nuclear já fornece 20% da eletricidade nos EUA, e a previsão é que sua capacidade triplique até 2050. Com o apoio do governo, essa fonte de energia está sendo vista como crucial para atingir metas de emissões líquidas zero no país. Estados que antes restringiam a construção de reatores, como Wisconsin e Virgínia Ocidental, estão revogando moratórias, permitindo novos desenvolvimentos.
Diante disso, os cofres das empresas de tecnologia nuclear e mineradoras de urânio acabam ficando mais cheios. A crescente demanda por urânio elevou os preços a níveis próximos de uma alta de 15 anos, beneficiando empresas como Cameco e NexGen. A NuScale Power, que fabrica SMRs, também está em ascensão, com grande expectativa de crescimento.
