Na era digital atual, CDs e DVDs foram amplamente substituídos por serviços de streaming e armazenamento em nuvem. No entanto, cientistas da Universidade de Chicago e do Argonne National Lab estão trabalhando para revitalizar o armazenamento em disco óptico com uma nova abordagem que aumenta significativamente a densidade de dados.
Em um estudo publicado na Physical Review Research , os pesquisadores desenvolveram um tipo de memória óptica que utiliza a transferência de luz de átomos de elementos de terras raras para defeitos quânticos próximos em um material sólido.
Um dos principais desafios do armazenamento óptico convencional é o limite de difração da luz, que restringe a densidade de dados porque cada bit não pode ser menor que o comprimento de onda do laser.

Para superar isso, os cientistas propuseram a utilização de emissores de terras raras, como cristais de óxido de magnésio, e a técnica de multiplexação de comprimento de onda, permitindo que cada emissor opere em um comprimento de onda ligeiramente diferente.
Isso poderia possibilitar o armazenamento de uma quantidade significativamente maior de dados no mesmo espaço.
Descobertas importantes do estudo
Os pesquisadores simularam um material teórico repleto de átomos de terras raras, descobrindo que, ao absorver luz, os defeitos quânticos mudam de estado de spin, dificultando revertê-los.
Essa propriedade sugere que os dados podem ser armazenados de forma mais duradoura.
No entanto, questões sobre a persistência desses estados excitados e a capacidade de armazenamento em comparação aos discos atuais ainda precisam ser investigadas.
Embora o avanço seja promissor, a transformação dessa tecnologia em um produto comercial pode levar anos de pesquisa e desenvolvimento adicionais.
